Tyler is known for manipulating watercolours to create vibrancy, iridescence and emotional depth in his portraits, there is a vital narrative aspect to this work which often captures absurd but layered moments in the unique lived experience of those he paints. In this piece, he captures the moment he first met the children in Nepal.
On the right-hand side is reoccurring figure Suzmeta, who was the first family Tyler helped in the restoration of their home in Nepal. Tapping into “all of us”, Tyler refers to “all of us” as lost children regardless of how much we have grown. He emphasises through the expression of the depicted children, the idea that all of us are making it up as we go, continuing to find out place in the world.
