Working with new mediums, Jane explores in this piece the beauty of traditional themes: native animals – capturing their essence with contemporary uses of naturalistic colours using encaustic wax on board. Surrounded by rugged and rolling hills and a habitat of a diverse range of flora and fauna, Smeets’ residence in a small coastal town within this region influences her choice of subject matter. The subject matter in this work of art supports an authentic connection and relationship to her artwork. This is a visiting magpie in her bird bath in her garden. Magpies are intelligent birds and recognise faces.
