Tyler is drawn to exploring the inner conflicts between the rationality of our intentions as human beings and the irrational universes we nevertheless construct. By manipulating watercolours to create vibrancy, iridescence and emotional depth in his portraits, there is a strong narrative aspect to this work which often captures absurd but layered moments in the unique lived experience of those he paints. In “like this”, Stent summarises his humanitarian action through art and story by capturing portraits of the children in Nepal. Although these paintings are striking even without the backstory, Stent says he has no interest in mere representations of handsome children. In this painting, Stent illustrates a young girl named Suzmeta, whom he has met and bonded with. he captures “the emotion behind the portrait.” through Suzmeta’s portrait, intensifying expression aesthetically by manipulating watercolour to reveal layered moments in the unique lived experience of this child.
