These two towers are loosely based on the famous towers in Bologna Italy. The towers were constructed by Bolognese citizens in the 12th and 13th Centuries with the tallest being 97m. Somewhere between 80 and 100 were built but the reason for construction of so many is not clear. One hypothesis is that rich families used them for offensive and defensive reasons during the period of the ‘Investiture Controversy’.
