Gishka Van Ree, an artist based in Kensington Gardens, has spent 14 years teaching general and botanical drawing at Pepper Street, following 18 years at the Adelaide Central School of Art. He adapted his teaching style for a diverse range of students, from young degree-holders to retirees. Gishka’s art revolves around organic themes, particularly fruit and shells, reflecting his deep connection to nature. He successfully incorporated his passion for landscape gardening into his art, with a notable series on gumnuts earning him the 2006 Victor Harbor art prize. Gishka, who holds five degrees in art, emphasizes the importance of students finding their artistic language. Despite the challenges of an artist’s path, he finds profound meaning in art and expresses a commitment to continue until his last day.
